Memory in Old Age

Metacognition in old age is extremely limited to the area of metamemory. There are few hypotheses surrounding other areas such as metacomprehension or problem solving. For the most part, memory of the elderly is very similiar to that of younger adults except in a few areas like memory monitoring and awareness of their memory problems. Elderly people tend to be more overconfident about their abilities in the memory department than younger adults. They also tend to be more aware of their loss in memory.

The loss of short term memory is very normal as the brain ages but the loss of long term memories signifies a greater problem i.e Dementia or Alzheimers. There are many different speculations on reasons for the loss of short term memory. Many say the ability of the brain to divide stem cells rapidly may be a cause while others say dietary plans make a difference.
