BROCA'S AREA

We often learn of Broca’s area and Wernicke’s area of the brain together. When the test rolls around, we are thinking of the difference in each of these areas, and all we remember is, when damaged, they lead to a language deficiency but we fail to remember the details. This area of the brain is named after Paul Pierre Broca. Broca, a french physician is most famous for his patients, LeLong and Leborgne. Both of these individuals exhibited trouble producing speech associated with hesitant, simple speech that is difficult to produce. After the deaths of these patients, Broca discovered lesions in the frontal portion of the brain. This area is now named Broca's Area.

Broca's Area is located in the frontal lobe of the brain, and is linked to human speech and language. Even though people usually associate Broca's Area strictly with language production, it has been found that it also plays an important role in understanding language as well. Broca's Area also deals with production of speech related actions and gestures as well. Broca's Area is linked to and usually works with another region of the brain that deals with understanding language, Wernicke's Area. Damage to Broca's Area can lead to Broca's Aphasia. Broca's Aphasia usually does not interfere with a person's ability to understand language, but it does cause people to have trouble producing language. These problems are usually shown by stuttering, the inability to produce words and the inability to produce logical sentences. Broca's Area is one of the most important areas of our brain when it comes to language and communication.

This site provides a comprehensive biography of Broca's life, a timeline of important events, and the contributions Broca has made to science.

2. Where is Broca's Area?

Here you can find a comprehensive discussion of the language production areas of the brain, including the language loop, Broca's Area and Wernicke's Area.

3. What are the roles/ functions of Broca's Area?

MIT researchers discuss the role of Broca's area, including language functions and its functions during difficult cognitive tasks. This study suggests there are more functions and specific areas of the brain involved in language and cognitive tasks to be examined.

4. What are the causes of Broca's Aphasia?

Here you can find the causes of Broca's aphasia. Most consist of damage to the brain from stroke, blunt force trauma, brain tumors, and brain infections. This site goes into detail on various neurological causes of Broca's Aphasia.

Here you can find the characteristics of Broca's Aphasia in a simple list. This page explains Broca's Aphasia in a simple, easy to understand manner.

Need an example of Broca's Aphasia to help you understand, click here and you will find a video of one of Broca's famous patients.

7. Are there any methods of treatment?

There are a few methods of treatment for Broca's Aphasia and other complex aphasia. This site describes one way called intensive language-action therapy that treats this disorder on a neurological level.

8. What are some relatively new research techniques of this brain area?

This article describes Intra-Cranial Electrophysiology which was used to study brain activity in awake patients using electrodes. This technique allows examination of brain activity's neural electrodes during language production and understanding.

9. Does the brain adapt to communicate even with Broca's Aphasia?

Here the plasticity of the brain is discussed. A patient, FV, was examined before during and after removal of language areas of the brain. His brain functions suggest a certain extent of plasticity in the brain that can develop even after removal of certain language areas.

10. Is this language area unique to humans?

This article describes an asymmetrical area in the left hemisphere in great apes that also has language functions suggesting that language production is not only found in humans, even though humans have a unique understanding and gift of sophisticated speech and apes do not.

11. How are Broca's Area and the Basal Ganglia related?

This article explains how Broca's Area works with other parts of the brain such as the Basal Ganglia. It shows and explains the connections and channels between the two parts of the brain and also talks about the functions that Broca's Area and the Basal Ganglia carry out together.

12. What do brain scans of Broca's Area and Broca's Aphasia look like?

This article shows brain scans of Broca's Area and brain scans of people with Broca's Aphasia. It also shows real pictures of brains with Broca's aphasia, and talks about the how the brains of Paul Broca's two patients were damaged and different from undamaged brains.

16. Is Broca's Area involved in picking up language errors?

Researchers conduct an experiment to show if Broca's Area is involved in picking up language errors by showing patients sentences with different errors and taking brain scans. This article talks about the experiment and what they found.

17. Are there tests that can determine if someone has Broca's Aphasia?

This article goes over multiple tests that are able to determine if someone is suffering from Broca's Aphasia or not.
