False Memories

Page history last edited by molly.claire19@... 10 years, 4 months ago

We all have memories; however, some are fact, some are fantasy, and some are false. What are false memories? They're just that, they're false. EXAMPLE: How many of you remember seeing Bugs Bunny at Disney? You haven't. Bugs Bunny isn't a Disney character, but in your mind it only makes sense that a fictional character like himself would be there. False memories have widely captured the attention of the mental health field. False memories occur when information is distorted of an event that didn't actually occur. Sometimes people will adopt other people's stories as their own, like Mitt Romney did a few years back. He mentioned that he attended the Golden Jubilee, but it really occurred before Romney was even born.  False memories are created the same way that true memories are created. These happen when a person gets misinformed by another or when one has the wrong source of information. Other existing memories can happen with existing knowledge and older memories. One case of false memories can occur while an event is happening. If someone saw a part of a crime being committed, but hasn't seen the whole thing, they can use prior knowledge to assume what is happening. Sometimes, even dreams can create a false memory and convince a person that something really did happen when it didn't. What does therapy do?  False memories are often seen in patients who have been sexually abused. When these patients suffer from trauma, they block off all their memories. When in therapy, they try memory recovery, which often ends up causing false memories. Some of these false memories are extremely bizarre and far-fetched.
