Motor Imagery Practice

Train your brain for greater performance!

When an individual uses motor imagery practice, they visualize a specific physical action or sequence of actions in order to enhance the physical performance of that action. Imagined movement can have an impact on the autonomic nervous system and can lead to higher breather and hart rates. Practicing motor skills internally can be done in different perspectives--external and internal. For running as an example, external imagery involves imagining, in third person perspective, another person running, whereas internal imagery is comprised of imagining the running action from a first person view. Research indicates that whenever applicable, physical practice is preferable to mental practice for learning. However, in instances where physical repetition is unavailable, mental rehearsal is still effective for enhancing performance.

For elite athletes like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tiger Woods, and Michael Phelps, it is common to visualize specific physical movements to improve sports performance. For each athlete, this involves envisioning their ideal outcomes—biceps the size of mountains for Arnold, executing the perfect race for Michael, and hitting the best shot for Tiger.

Athletes!
